Laparoscopic Large Bowel Surgery

(Right and Left Hemicolectomy)

Surgery of the large bowel may involve a right or left hemicolectomy. A hemicolectomy is the surgical term used to describe the removal of a portion of the large bowel (colon/intestine). These surgical procedures are performed in instances of large bowel malfunction and disease (Crohn’s disease, Diverticular disease and colon cancer). Laparoscopic techniques are frequently used for this surgery, which helps to reduce complications and speed up recovery times. Either side of the colon can be removed depending upon the location of the disease e.g. right or left hemicolectomy. You will be advised where your disease is located and which technique is suitable for you.
