About Dr Mastakov

Experienced surgical care with a practical, personal approach.

Dr Mastakov is a bariatric and general surgeon with experience in elective and emergency surgery, including laparoscopic procedures and complex general surgical conditions. His practice includes weight-loss surgery, hiatus and abdominal hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, appendectomy, haemorrhoid procedures, bowel surgery and other common general surgical presentations.

He completed fellowship in Australia and has worked across Queensland hospitals including Princess Alexandra Hospital, QEII Jubilee Hospital, Logan Hospital, Redland Hospital, Townsville Teaching Hospital, Rockhampton Hospital and Nambour Hospital.

Consultations are designed to help patients understand their condition, available treatment pathways, likely recovery considerations and next steps. Where surgery is appropriate, the plan is tailored to the patient’s health history, goals and clinical needs.

Practice Focus

Surgical services and conditions

Dr Mastakov provides consultations for bariatric, hernia and general surgery concerns. The most appropriate pathway depends on each patient’s symptoms, health background and investigation results.

Training & background

From general and trauma surgery to specialist practice in Queensland.

Before practising in Australia, Dr Mastakov worked as a general and trauma surgeon. His early surgical experience included reconstructive and restorative surgery for post-burn scarring and contractures, and a role in hand microsurgery.

He has also been involved in research and scientific publication, with work appearing in journals including Gene Therapy, Molecular Therapy and Journal of Virology.

Laparoscopic care

Keyhole surgery where clinically appropriate.

Many procedures can be performed laparoscopically, using smaller incisions than traditional open surgery. Open surgery may still be recommended for some conditions depending on safety, anatomy, previous operations and the clinical situation.

During consultation, the team will explain the recommended approach, expected recovery considerations and any preparation required before surgery.
